24-Hour Holter ECG monitoring

The Cardiac Holter or complete dynamic electrocardiogram according to Holter is a non-invasive painless examination to record the electric activity of the heart 24 hours a day. Hence it is an electrocardiogram with recordings that can last 24 hours or more, instead of being limited to a few seconds.

What is the purpose of Cardiac Holter monitoring ?

The Cardiac Holter is an important tool to study all types of arrhythmias and symptoms, such as palpitations, dizziness and loss of consciousness. It can also be useful in conditions presenting poor blood supply to the heart (ischaemia) or in case of chest pain of uncertain origin.

Recordings are stored in digital flash memories, and data are transferred to the computer. A software helps the doctor to read and interpret the ECG plot. Hence, the electric activity of the heart can be analysed for a longer period of time. This allows to observe changes during the various phases of the day, which are, therefore, associated with routine daily activities.

How is the Cardiac Holter examination performed ?

The Cardiac Holter is performed with a device that records the electric activity of the heart for at least 24 hours.

The patient must visit the Pharmacy where some electrodes connected to a portable device (a small battery-operated recorder) are applied on his chest. The patient will wear them for the established period of time, both during the day and at night, in order to continuously record the electrocardiogram while performing his daily routine.

At the end of the established period, the patient will once again visit the Pharmacy to remove the electrodes and return the device that contains his data. Said information will be analysed through telemedicine systems by the 4Prevent cardiologist who will draw up a report to define a diagnosis and study any cardiac diseases.

During the Cardiac Holter recording, the patient must perform his daily activities without limitations, only ensuring that the pads do not detach from the skin as a result of too many movements.

If he experiences any disorder, he can report it by pressing a button to store it in the device’s memory. The electric signals stored are processed by an external device when the recorder is detached from the patient.

Indicated for:

  • arhythmia;
  • symptoms, such as palpitations, dizziness, asthenia, loss of consciousness, ischaemia and chest pain;
  • prevention;
  • physical exercise.
